FAQ

What does "natural" pet food mean?

A. There are differences of opinion as to what type of additives or processing aids can be included in “natural” pet food but generally the term applies to pet food that is formulated to utilize feed and ingredients that are derived from plant, animal or mineral sources. However even products that strive to use only natural ingredients generally use some synthetically-created additives. Our products fall into that category. For example, the vitamin C used in Regal products is a synthetic product. Natural vitamin C would be destroyed in the processing of our pet food. We use a preservative and source of vitamins that the manufacturer has identified as being “natural” within the meaning of the American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) definition but there are people who claim that it shouldn’t be so described because some of the tocopherols contained in the product are chemicals. Other areas of ambiguity in terms of what “natural” means relate to ingredients like soy or lecithin, which is made from soy. One school of thought asserts that those ingredients shouldn’t be called “natural” because the soy is often grown from genetically modified seeds, the plants are exposed to chemicals, or the processing of lethicin involves synthetic substances. Since even pet food created to maximize use of natural ingredients has some small amount of chemical or synthetic additives, you’ll see manufacturers who commit to natural ingredients describe their products as “natural plus vitamins and minerals”. The vitamins and minerals added during the manufacturing process do not always come from plant, animal or mineral sources. The core feed and ingredients in Regal products, though, come from natural sources.

What does Classification mean?

A. Classification is a special process that removes non-digestible material from the meat meals. The non-digestible particles are separated using air by molecular weight. The end result is a meal with a higher level of protein and digestibility, and lower ash.

Why do you stress balance? Don't all the super premium foods have balanced nutrition?

A. We stress balance because more major protein sources equal better amino acid sources and that makes for a more digestible food, which is better utilized by your pet. Balance is the single most important principle in super-premium foods. So while other foods may think that they contain a balanced protein, they are not as balanced as Regal because they do not have as many major protein sources. Cats and dogs are true carnivores -they will do "OK" on other foods using grain proteins, but they will always do better when fed a diet rich in real major meat proteins.

Why do you have so many sources of fat in your foods? Chicken fat, Lamb fat, fish oil, Flax seed, vegetable oil, Lecithin, olive oil canola oil.

A. Animal fats alone in a food can put bulk on your animal. We use turkey and chicken fats as well as fish, vegetable, canola and olive oils to give your pet more lustrous hair and supple skin. Using a combination of oils also provides the best balance of essential fatty acids, including Omega 3 & Omega 6 fatty acids so important in nutrition.

What is lecithin and why do you use it in all of your foods?

A. Lecithin is a special type of vegetable oil, rich in essential linoleic acid and phospho-choline needed in energy metabolism.

Why do you use beet pulp as fiber?

A. The single best fiber source available for dogs and cats is beet pulp. It helps in providing soft, well- formed stools. Beet pulp provides the best balance of soluble and insoluble fiber.

I don't see any preservatives on your products. I like that, but how does that affect the shelf life?

A. Regal Pet Foods are preserved with a product made of mixed tocopherals, including natural Vitamin E, which is identified by the manufacturer as being “natural” within the meaning of the American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) definition. That allows us to provide a fresher product with better nutrition. We guarantee our products for 15 months, properly stored.

What makes Lamb Bites so special?

A. Regal Lamb Bites contain only New Zealand grade lamb meal, which is not adulterated with any other meat source such as chicken meal. Most domestic grade lamb meals have up to 95% chicken meal. Regal Lamb Bites uses real lamb fat to add lanolin into the pet’s skin and coat for outstanding condition. With no soy, corn, wheat or poultry fats, this lamb formula is excellent for the allergic pet preferring a lamb diet, or for any adult dog.

Why is Regal Cat Food the only adult food your cat will ever need?

A. Regal Cat Food was developed with only one goal in mind: provide the highest quality feline diet, which is balanced in all six nutrient categories to provide optimum nutrition to all normal adult cats. No other food is needed nor is any recommended for balanced nutrition. Total Nutrient Balance is the difference in Regal Cat Food. The six protein sources are easily digested and come from turkey, whole egg, chicken, herring, chicken liver and corn gluten. Energy balance from five selected sources of fats and oils and three carbohydrates provides the essential fatty acids balanced for soft skin and bright hair coat and optimum metabolizable energy for growth and activity. Regal Cat Food provides 90 milligrams of arachadonic acid and 910 milligrams of linoleic acid per 100K/cal of metabolizable energy (ME) .Mineral balance with all 21 known required minerals. Regal Cat Food provides cats with 262 milligrams of calcium and 186 milligrams of phosphorous per 100 K/cal of ME. But only 19.7 milligrams of magnesium and 116 milligrams of sodium for the same 100 Kcalories of ME. Regal Cat Food also provides 135 milligrams of potassium per 100 Kcalories of ME. The balance of these five essential minerals is critical in the control and prevention of Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS) and other Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD )(1,2). The potassium level is critical in preventing chronic renal disease as recently learned in other high protein, high energy diets(3). Because Regal Cat Food uses high quality meat proteins supplemented with taurine, methionine and lysine, the urine pH normally ranges between 6.5 and 6.7, which is also essential in reducing the risk of Feline Urolithiasis (4). Quality fiber sources are often overlooked in most premium foods. Regal Cat Food uses oat bran and beet pulp, which supplies a balance between soluble and non-soluble fiber. This optimum fiber balance helps regulate mineral balance and rate of food passage through the digestive system. Regal Cat Food is fortified with fourteen purified, high- biologically, available balanced vitamins, including the four fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and the ten essential water-soluble vitamins including ascorbic acid. Further, all Regal Cat Foods are Preserved with alpha, delta and gamma tocopherols. No ethoxyquin, BRA or BHT is added to the food. Balance makes the difference. All Regal products contain the proper balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Regal products do not contain By-Products. All other major super premium food manufacturers sell two adult diets; one for taking weight off and one for putting weight on. Consequently, neither is properly balanced between energy and nutrients. If they were, the cat's weight would remain consistent. All healthy, normal animals of all species can regulate their nutrient intake if properly balanced with metabolizable energy. There is only one way to maintain an animal in proper weight, health and activity, and that is to balance the energy to all the required nutrients. Only Regal Cat Food uses so many ingredient sources to properly balance the nutrients with metabolizable energy.

Your Lean Bites does not have high levels of fiber. How is it going to reduce my dog’s weight?

A. Regal Lean Bites combines soluble and insoluble carbohydrates with just the right level of fiber to meet your dogs' appetite, as well as nutritional needs, without excessive fiber. Lean Bites is a well- balanced formula, containing fewer kilocalories and less protein per cup. By combining more major protein sources with a better balance amino acid profile, Lean Bites meets your dog’s nutritional requirements with fewer calories.

Sensi-Bites has been successfully used by dog owners to prevent reoccurrence of food allergic reactions caused by foods containing beef, lamb, milk, soy, gluten, or fish. Regal Sensi-Bites contains over 5% linoleic Acid and the proper ratio between Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Regal Sensi Bites are listed with allergy testing laboratories across thee U.S.

Why is an extruded product better than a baked product?

A. Extrusion cooling thoroughly cooks the raw starches from cereal grains such as rice, milo, oats and carley. This makes for a more palatable and less dense food than a baked product. Also, becauseBaked foods must use high levels of wheat flour in order to properly bake the food; baked kibble contains fewer of the more nutritious grains (such as rice, oats and milo) and less animal protein. Regal also uses a specially designed pre-conditioning unit for a slower starch cook. This increases our cook rate into the high 90's for better digestibility and energy utilization by your pet.

Your puppy food has lower protein than other brands. Why? Is this enough for normal growth?

A. Regal Puppy Bites contains a lower percentage of protein than some other brands because we choose to focus on quality meat proteins and not just guaranteed analysis. Higher quality proteins provide a better amino acid profile, which in turn makes for better digestibility and utilization of the protein. Also, excessive levels of protein and fat, especially in medium to large breeds, can cause bone development problems. Puppy Bites exceeds all of the nutritional needs of your puppy.
